Did you know...
There are more than 20,000 species of bees around the world, most of them are solitary bees and others are organized to live in colonies. Within the great diversity of bees, meliponas, also known as stingless bees, differ from all others because they can’t sting.
In the Yucatan Peninsula we can find 17 of the 46 species of stingless bees registered in Mexico. Some of them produce high quality honey that has been used since ancient times as a supplement to the diet and medicinal purposes.
Of the stingless bee species that are found in the Yucatan Peninsula, the Melipona Beecheii ("royal bee", "Xunan kaab") is the most appreciated for its medicinal properties and it produces only 1.5 liters of honey per year. Its honey helps strengthen the immune system, heal wounds, stop the growth of glaucoma, relieve eye infections, burns, respiratory diseases and as a skin revitalizer.
At Miel Nativa we work hand in hand with producers, we accompany them in the sustainable management of bees and we make them part of a fair and responsible value chain.
At Miel Nativa we promote the construction of fair value chains, committed to the conscious and responsible use of the biocultural resources of the Yucatan Peninsula.
